New Owner to Announce Plans for Skirvin by Nov. 1

Journal Record Staff Reporter The sale of the Skirvin Plaza Hotel to Empire Land Corp. of New Orleans was completed Tuesday, and Empire's attorney said an announcement about the company's plans for the downtown landmark is expected by Nov. 1.

"We are dedicated to seeing that the hotel doesn't stay vacant for very much longer," said Oklahoma City lawyer Greg Mahaffey, who represents Empire and its principal shareholder, Louisiana businessman Louis J. Roussel. Mahaffey declined to elaborate on Roussel's plans.

Empire bid $2.2 million for the Skirvin at an Oklahoma County sheriff's auction Sept. 4, as a "substitute plaintiff" for Mutual Saving Life Insurance Co. of Decatur, Ala., which foreclosed on the property in December 1989.

The hotel was closed by its previous owners, Texas businessmen Michael Proffitt and Peter Streit, in October 1988.

Oklahoma County District Judge David Cook signed the court order confirming the sale of the Skirvin to Empire Land Corp. …
