Exxon Develops Solutions to Deep Drilling Problems

Predictions of the natural gas bubble bursting has become trite to many producers. Hence, there are few drilling for deep gas at $18 million a well.

Yet, experts predict that the environmental aspects of gas and the Mideast crisis will help facilitate a more equitable price for gas compared to crude oil. New technology also has provided optimism.

There is hardly a deep drilling boom going on in western Oklahoma, but Exxon is currently busy in Beckham County - in the heart of the Anadarko Basin where deep gas has its roots. The company has been operator of Northeast Mayfield since 1988, six years after it went into production.

The old problems of deep drilling - beyond 15,000 feet - like high pressure zones, hard abrasive rocks, high temperature and gas contamination of drilling mud, have not been altogether licked. But Exxon has the Walne producing 28 million cubic feet a day at 25,826 feet from Hunton lime, the Hazel Howell in completion at 25,425 feet with equal rates expected and the Baker ready to spud in mid-December.

By Tim Hartley Whiteco Industries Inc. of Merrillville, Ind., has purchased property near Int. Hwy. 40 and S. Meridian Ave. for development of a $4 million family fun center.

Construction is expected to begin next week on the vacant six-acre site south of Int. Hwy. 40 and east of Meridian. The property is flanked on the west by a Shoney's restaurant and Ramada Inn hotel, and on the east by a Bennigan's restaurant.

Plans call for the complex, to be known as Celebration Station, to straddle Westline Dr.

An above-the-street pedestrian walkway is planned, to link the east and west sides of the park.

The layout includes an adult go-cart road course, a pizza restaurant with entertainment and animated characters, a game arcade, 54 elaborate holes of miniature golf, batting cages with pitching machines, bumper boats and a small go-cart track for children. …
