Will Rogers Airport Adds Extra Security Measures

Feature Editor Extra security measures were initiated beginning at 4:50 a.m. Thursday at Will Rogers World Airport and other airports throughout the United States.

The new procedures were initiated at the direction of the Federal Aviation Agency following the start of air strikes on Iraq. The extra security is a precaution against earlier threats by Iraq's Pres. Saddam Hussein of terrorist attacks on United States Airports, said Tom Morton, airport public relations director.

No threats or unusual activities had been reported at Oklahoma City or any other U.S. airports, nor had the added security measures delayed scheduled flights at Will Rogers Airport by late Thursday, said Leroy Hansen, Oklahoma City airports director.

Travelers are encouraged to arrive at the airport for flights one and a half hours before departure time, Morton said. It previously took 30 to 45 minutes for normal check-in for flights.

A five-stage airport security contingency plan was requested by the Federal Aviation Agency in December. That plan was developed by Hansen and approved by the agency for Will Rogers Airport the first week of January, Morton said.

The maximum security level of the plan, Alert 4, was initiated Thursday. Alert 1 was initiated a few days after the plan was approved, then Alert 2 stage, and Alert 2A was in effect Tuesday and Wednesday, Morton said.

Additional uniformed and undercover police officers and two canine units were assigned to the airport terminal Thursday. Other security measures, which normal passengers will not see, also were initiated, Morton said.

Changes in the normal routine for travelers include:

- No unattended vehicles will be allowed within 100 feet of the passenger terminal. Passengers may still be unloaded at the door, if their vehicle is attended by a driver at all times. …
