$1.9 Million Renovation Slated for Stage Center

A $1.9 million renovation is planned for the Stage Center at Festival Place, 400 W. Sheridan Ave.

A building permit for a project estimated at $1.15 million has been issued to Yordi, Smith & Pickel Construction Inc. of Oklahoma City, but construction will not begin before a fund raising campaign is completed by the Arts Council of Oklahoma City, said Arts Council spokeswoman Liz Eickman.

She said a construction start date will be announced in mid-May.

"We are in the final stages of fund raising," Eickman said. "We have said that we would not begin construction until we had all the pledges in hand."

In August 1986 the Stage Center, then owned by the Kirkpatrick Center, closed amid financial difficulties compounded by dwindling attendance and high energy bills.

The Arts Council purchased the building in 1987, with plans to renovate and reopen it, along with the nearby McAlpine Center, for use by multiple theater and arts groups. Bill Johnstone, chairman of the Arts Council, said a $700,000 facelift at McAlpine Center was complete, and the Stage Center fund raising campaign was within $100,000 of the $1. …
