Store Provides Variety of Earth-Friendly Goods

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - There's unpetroleum jelly for the baby's bottom, non-toxic pet shampoo and a wide range of cleaning products that contain no chlorine, petroleum, phosphates, alcohol or lye.

There's also a water purification system that will take the salt from sea water or the lead from drinking water in old homes with lead pipes.

Unpainted cedar wood pencils, alluring jewelry made from trash washed up on the seashore and art gift wrap made using soy-based inks also are part of the inventory of a new store designed to help consumers help the environment.

``People are looking for ways to make amends to the environment,'' said Laurie Brown, who opened Restore the Earth Store in February. ``I believe this is one way to begin.''

Brown said if change is to be accomplished, it has to be made fun and easy for the consumer.

``You have to make people feel good if they do a little bit. I thought retail would be a good way to do this,'' Brown said.

In the same vein, the store offers classes for adults and children on composting, organic gardening, water purification, water testing and eco-art. The composting and organic lawn care classes being offered are taught by a professional horticulturist, the art classes by a local artist.

The store also has resources and reference materials on environmental topics available for customers.

Brown spent nine months finding and researching contents of products she sells in the store. She said Restore the Earth Store is the first of its scope in Minnesota and one of only a handful in North America. The only other similar stores she is aware of, all relatively new, are in Winnipeg, Rochester, N.Y., and Santa Fe, N.M.

Rather than finding environmentally safe household products and office supplies under one roof, Brown said, shoppers previously had to drive to several locations, shop by mail or buy from door-to-door salespeople. …
