Air Show to Improve Traffic Control, Parking

By Bill May Journal Record Staff Reporter Something new has been added to Aerospace America '91 to help specta- tors enjoy it more: police officers to direct traffic after the shows are over. Not only have police and parking lot attendants been added, but special lights will be installed in parking lots for the Friday night show to make it easier for spectators to find their cars, according to Air Show Director Kathy Jones. Along with this change, a parking and traffic pattern change is expected to ease congestion around Will Rogers World Airport Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 14-16, when the show is held. "In the years past, the only real problem has been getting people in and out," said John Goodwin, of the air show planning committee, during a press conference at Tinker Air Force Base Tuesday. "We also have added 12 new gates which will be all opened at one time, to allow faster parking. "Some lots will be reserved (for) press, sponsors and participants." This was done in response to com- plaints in years past. "This is a quality air show," said Secretary Stanley Draper, "and people are not going to put up with a two-hour delay getting in and out year after year. We had to do something." Along with the revamped parking, the show will feature "a whole bunch of headliners" during the three days of performances, Jones said. "When we began planning this show, we thought the U.S. Air Force Thunder- birds and `Tora! Tora! Tora!' (a depic- tion of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor) would be our headliners," she said during the press conference. "This is the 50th anniversary of that attack, and we thought this would be something important for us to headline. "But it seems like every day we get new headliners. …
