State Drilling Rig Count Suffers 3rd Weekly Loss

By Ronda Fears Journal Record Staff Reporter Oklahoma's active drilling rig count for the week slid by another four rigs to 91 in the third weekly loss, remaining at the lowest level since mid-1989.

The weekly tally was down from 95 the previous week and 24.2 percent lower than 120 rigs working across the state during the comparable week in 1990, according to Baker Hughes Inc. of Houston. The statewide rig count stood at 81 in mid-June 1989.

Oklahoma's flagging rig count mirrors the state of drilling activity across the nation.

The U.S. rig count for the week has also been hovering at the lowest level since mid-June 1989, when heavy rains soaked the oilpatch and drillers could not get to the rigs in the field.

For the week, the national tally lost one rig to 798 from the previous week. That was 21.1 percent lower than 1,012 rigs working across the country during the comparative week in 1990.

Drilling for oil for the week accounted for 54.6 percent of activity while drilling for natural gas made up 42. …
