Reading Glasses to Go Spreads into OKC Market

Article excerpt

A dislike that got on the nerves of Dallas businessman Bob Granoff led to his starting a small chain of stores that has located two stores in Oklahoma City and created eight new jobs.

"This was just an idea I had. For many years I didn't like the atmosphere of buying reading glasses in the drug store," Granoff said.

Granoff, who also is in the hotel business, decided to do something about that atmosphere and opened his first Reading Glasses to Go store on Lovers Lane in Dallas four and a half years ago in 1987. He now has six stores and a factory- warehouse operation for making and distributing non-prescription reading glasses.

The Dallas stores, production and distribution operations employ about 30 people, he said.

He opened Reading Glasses to Go stores in Oklahoma City in September.

One is located in Quail Springs Mall and the other in Crossroads Mall. Each store employs a manager and three clerks trained to adjust the frames of glasses to fit customers, Granoff said.

Manager of the Crossroads Mall store is Glenda Orrell, who previously worked in a prescription optical glasses store. Manager of the Quail Springs store is Margie Store.

"We are the only people anywhere that do this kind of thing. It is a huge, growing market. Before we got into the business, people had to go to the drug store or the optical shop _ the two extremes.

"This is a business that didn't exist four and a half years ago. We created all new jobs in a total new industry," Granoff said.

He declined to release sales figures for the company.

Granoff is president of Reading Glasses to Go. His son, Peter, is vice president, and his wife, Pearl, is advertising director.

"There are 78 million Baby Boomers starting to need reading glasses.

Reading glasses are fashionable now. Both of our Oklahoma City stores have been in the black since they opened up," said Pearl Granoff. …
