Metro Sales Tax Collections Up for First Quarter

Sales tax collections for the first quarter of 1992 were up in 15 of 19 cities in the metropolitan Oklahoma City area.

Collections for the quarter totaled $49.07 million, up 6.3 percent from $46.18 million for the first quarter of 1991, according to a monthly report from the Oklahoma Tax Commission.

Collections for the 19 cities have been up for 15 of the last 16 quarters. The fourth quarter of 1991, when collections were down 0.2 percent, was the only quarter since the third quarter of 1988 that collections for area cities and towns were down.

The only municipality with a decrease for the quarter of 4 percent or more was Midwest City, which was collecting at a 2 percent rate for the first quarter compared with a 3 percent rate for the first quarter of 1991. Collections for Midwest City for the quarter totaled $2.2 million, down 34.6 percent from $3.4 million for the first quarter of 1991, according to the tax commission report, which was for distributions to municipalities in May for business in March.

Collections for corporate Oklahoma City for the quarter totaled $32.2 million, up 10.5 percent from $29.1 million for the first quarter of 1991. Oklahoma City had a sales tax rate of 2.875 percent for both the first quarter of 1992 and 1991.

For March, collections were up in 11 of the municipalities and down for eight.

Collections for the 19 municipalities for March totaled $16.27 million, down 0.2 percent from $16.3 million for March 1991.

Corporate Oklahoma City collections for the month totaled $10.8 million, up 4.2 percent from $10.37 million for March 1991. Collections for corporate Oklahoma City have been up for three consecutive months when compared with the same month of the previous year and for five of the last six months.

Four municipalities had increases for March of 10 percent or more, according to the tax commission report.

The largest increase in collections for March among the 19 municipalities was for The Village, which was up 21. …
