OU Health Center Establishes Environmental Institute

Article excerpt

An Institute of Environmental Management has been established within the College of Public Health at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City.

The institute will be for research and technical assistance in the areas of pollution prevention and management of environmental programs and service and resource allocation, said Bailus Walker Jr., dean of the College of Public Health.

"The focus of the institute is to join scholars and scientists from different fields in a common approach to the prevention of environmentally provoked disease and dysfunction and to promote sustainable development _ the moral and practical imperative that economic development should not endanger the quality of the environment," said Walker.

"Recognizing the need for environmental protection, the prevention of environmentally provoked disease and dysfunction, the expanding supply of energy, and national, state and local development and competitiveness, the institute will conduct research on priority environmental issues related to the integration of economics, health, energy and the environment."

Walker said the institute will contribute to the formulation and implementation of changes to improve health, to improve the quality of the environment, and to heighten ecological risk management. These objectives will be pursued through research, education and service activities.

Walker will supervise the institute, for which Daniel Boatright, associate professor of occupation and environmental health, has been named director. Boatright is a member of the Governor's Council on the Environment and of the board of directors of the National Association of Environmental Managers.

Mark Cox, assistant professor of occupation and environmental health, has been named the institute's assistant director for research and development. …
