Article excerpt

BARTLESVILLE _ Phillips Petroleum Co. is franchising one of its products for the first time in its 75-year history, the Bartlesvillesed company said Monday.

The franchising will be for UltraClean Propaneeet LPG to make alternative fuels more accessible in areas facing tough new Clean Air Act mandates, Phillips said.

Phillips has signed a franchise agreement with Glaser Gas Inc. of Calhan, Colo., which will, under the UltraClean brand, convert vehicles to run on propane, service propane vehicles and sell UltraClean through its outlet in Colorado Springs.

The franchise agreement is more than a first for Phillips _ it's the first franchise in the U.S. propane business and one of only a handful of franchises in the U.S. petroleum industry, Phillips said.

The company owns and operates conversion, service and refueling facilities in Denver and Fort Collins, Colo., and in Wyoming. Currently there are more than 45 fleets operating on UltraClean in Colorado and Wyoming.

The company also has UltraClean operations in St. Louis and is looking to expand to other major metropolitan areas in the Midwest.

"By franchising UltraClean we'll provide a basis for faster growth of propane as an alternative fuel prior to 1997, when major requirements of the federal Clean Air Act will be mandated," says Warren Carey, vice president of Phillips 66 Propane.

Phillips expects to sign additional clean fuels franchises in Colorado by year end.

Glaser Gas Inc., founded in 1949, serves about 5,000 residential and commercial propane customers in five counties in south central Colorado. The company's motor fuel operations include a propane conversionrvice center in Calhan, Colo. …
