Blockbuster Entertainment Corp. of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., has plans to expand its presence in the Oklahoma City area market with four new stores which would bring the total number of units in the area to 15.

Construction has already begun on a Blockbuster Video store at 1208 Garth Brooks Blvd. in Yukon, and permits have been issued for one store each in Moore, Del City and Shawnee. Each store is estimated at $210,000 and construction is to begin immediately.

A store with 6,000 square feet is planned at 504 Shawnee Mall Dr. in Shawnee. Sunrise Construction Co. of Houston is listed as the contractor on all four stores. The unit in Yukon is planned for 9,000 square feet, according to the building permit.

The Yukon store is on the corner of land being used for the Walrt Supercenter, which is still under construction. That development could be open as soon as October. The Blockbuster Video is expected to open in the next 30 days, said Bryan Coon, president of Coon Engineering Inc. of Oklahoma City. Coon Engineering is the engineer on the four Blockbuster projects as well as several other Blockbuster units out-ofate.

Maxwell Architects of Dallas is the architect on the Moore video store, and it is assumed that the company designed the other three stores, Coon said.

All of the Blockbuster Video stores will be free standing units.

Lasco Development Corp. of Houston is listed as the owner of each of the units.

Both the Del City and Moore units are planned with 6,500 square feet each. Blockbuster in Moore will be at 1120 N. Eastern Ave., the southeast corner of N. 12th St. and Eastern Ave. The Del City unit is planned at SE 44th St. and Mickey Rd.

Blockbuster Video stores offer entertainment, instructional and cultural videos. The basic Blockbuster concept features threeening rentals for movies and twoening rentals during the first three weeks of new releases.

Most Blockbuster Video stores carry about 10,000 tapes and more than 8,000 titles. All stores are open from 10 a.m. to midnight seven days a week, 365 days a year. …
