Wage, Salary Employment Drops 0.7% in September

Oklahoma nonrm wage and salary employment of 1.19 million people in September was down 0.7 percent from 1.2 million in September 1991, the Oklahoma Employment Security Commission reported Wednesday.

The figure was up 1.1 percent, however, from 1.18 million people in August.

In the goodsoducing sector, which includes manufacturing, mining and construction, employment was down 4.4 percent to 238,400 people in September, compared with 249,500 people in September 1991. Employment was down slightly from 240,200 people in August. Manufacturing employment totaled 163,500 people, down 3 percent from 168,600 people in September 1991, and down less than 1 percent from 164,500 people in August. The largest decline was in the paper and allied products component, which lost 300 employees or 7.1 percent. Major losses also occurred in the aircraft and parts component, down 3.1 percent or 200 employees, and the transportation equipment component, down 1.3 percent or 200 employees. Mining employment of 36,100 people in September was down 12.8 percent from 41,400 people in September 1991, and down 1.6 percent from 36,700 in August. The number of construction workers fell 1.8 percent to 38,800 workers in September, compared with 39,500 in September 1991. The figure was down by less than 1 percent from 39,000 workers in August.

In the heavy construction contractors category, employment increased by 1.1 percent, or 100 jobs, compared with August, in preparation for new bids that were allocated at the end of September, the report said. Otherwise, the 9,400 jobs in that sector in September represented a 6.9 percent drop from 10,100 in September 1991.

October employment numbers should reflect new construction activity on the state's highways and bridges, the report said. Employment in the serviceoducing sector totaled 958,600 people in September, up 0.3 percent from 956,000 in September 1991. The figure was up 1.6 percent from 943,800 in August. This category includes transportation and public utilities; wholesale and retail trade; finance, insurance and real estate; and government. …
