Journal Record Owner of Year Named

Article excerpt

The Journal Record Owner of the Year at Remington Park is Ridgemont Farms of Purcell, a new racing corporation that includes three professional football players among its stockholders.

The award will be presented between races Sunday by Larry Fisk, president of the Journal Record Publishing Co.

Ridgemont Farms chalked up a record of 11 wins, or 58 percent, from the 19 horses it started in the fall meet. Its horses also won four seconds and one third to place it in the money in 84 percent of its races. Its horses have won $115,135 during the fall meet.

Ridgemont Farms horses run under the colors of the Dallas Cowboys, for whom two of the owners, Tony Casillas and Daryl Johnston are football players. Their jockeys wear silver and blue silks with a star on the sleeve.

Most notable win of the Remington Park fall meet for Ridgemont Farms was the $62,000 Oklahoma Thoroughbred Association Futurity won by Bronko Boy on Nov. 14.

Some of their other winners include Tender Lies, an allowance race winner, Kidd Creek and Crystal Shannon.

"They have just won or placed in every type of race this year," said Keith Chamblin, director of media relations at Remington Park.

An announcement was released Wednesday that the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association, with headquarters in Lexington, Ky., also had selected Ridgemont Farms its Owner of the Month for November.

The farm will be the subject of a nationally televised "Owner of the Month" feature sponsored by Gainsborough Farm and shown on The Budweiser Thoroughbred Digest in late December.

"We are the only group from Oklahoma to win that as far as we know. We are real pleased about that," said Michael Lee, Oklahoma City, a stockholder and spokesman for the corporation.

Stockholders in Ridgemont Farms include Tony Casillas, defensive lineman of the Dallas Cowboys and a former University of Oklahoma player from Tulsa; Daryl Johnston, fullback of the Dallas Cowboys; Chris Verhulst, retired tight end of the San Diego Chargers; Lee, an Oklahoma City oil and gas operator; Buddy Ward, of Ridgemont Productions, Oklahoma City, president and chief executive officer of Ridgemont Farms; Jim Browne, attorney in the Oklahoma City law firm of James B. Browne Associates; Steve Zrenda, attorney in the Oklahoma City law firm of Bright Zrenda Dunn; and Dan Cheatum, Edmond, electrical contractor in the firm of Shawver Sons Electric Co. and involved in oil and gas operations.

Trainer for the Ridgemont Farms stable is Garry Chamberlain.

Casillas attends all of the races possible when Ridgemont Farms horses are racing, except for Sundays when he is on the field playing football for the Dallas Cowboys, Chamblin said.

"He calls the track and listens to the races on the telephone when he can't be at the track," Chamblin said. …
