OKC Area Auto Sales Rise for 11th Month

Metropolitan Oklahoma City auto sales rose in November compared with the same period last year, the 11th consecutive increase this year.

But, sales in November dipped from October sales, according to trade association figures released Tuesday.

Franchised new car dealers sold 6,295 new and used cars and light-duty trucks in November, up 5.5 percent from 5,966 in November 1991 but down 17.7 percent from 7,657 in October, the Metropolitan Auto Dealers Association said.

There was an average of 262 new and used cars and light-duty trucks, foreign and domestic, sold by the 51 association members in November, compared with 283 in October and 239 in November 1991.

Despite the drop from October sales, the 51 association members report total sales each month this year are up from a comparable month of 1991.

In fact, November sales were up from last year across the board, except for the sales of used cars and light-duty trucks, marking the first time this year that this category has been down from a similar month of 1991.

One reason sales of used cars and light-duty trucks in November fell from 1991 is because there were 24 selling days in November 1992 and 25 selling days in November 1991. Member dealers sold an average of 135 used cars and trucks per selling day last month, compared with 132 sold per selling day in November 1991.

October had 27 selling days.

The dip from October sales is a seasonal, annual drop and was expected, according to Bill Roby, the association's executive director.

"Every year in which we've been keeping records, there has been a drop from October to November," Roby said. "But also, December usually is a better month than November.

"The trend seems to be following previous years, but we expect most of the dealer-members to end the year in good shape. …
