Adequate funding of the conservation division of the Oklahoma Corporation Commission is an important issue for the well-being of the petroleum industry, said Michael H. Bernard, incoming president of the Oklahoma Mid-Continent Oil Gas Association.

"Although most oil and gas drilling activities offer only limited environmental threat, more is expected of us today than in the past," Bernard said in a news release. "Oklahoma has a fine set of rules, but enforcement of those rules needs improvement."

Bernard takes over Friday as president of the association. He has served as vice president and lobbyist since June 1985 after first joining the group in 1984 as state relations director. He was elected to his new post in September.

"Even in the face of declining activity, the petroleum industry is a strong and important industry in Oklahoma," Bernard said. He said the industry's contributions are significant and shouldn't be taken for granted by state officials and the public.

"Petroleum is a most vital raw material that, if managed correctly, should play a central role in the economy for years to come," he said. …
