54 Dealers Sign Up for City Auto Show

It hasn't yet grown to the magnitude of similar events in other parts of the nation, but the Oklahoma City Auto Show holds out the promise of some glimpse into the future.

That future will be in the form of concept cars and prototypes from the so-called "Big 3" domestic car makers _ General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler Corp. _ according to Bill Roby, executive director of the sponsoring Metropolitan Auto Dealers Association.

"I don't know at this time what those concept cars or prototypes will be. I won't know until they unload the trucks," Roby said Tuesday. "This isn't Detroit (auto show) where they will have more than 1 million visitors, so we take what we can get. But all three of them have promised us some sort of concept car or prototype, maybe more than one."

Already 54 dealers, representing 38 manufacturers and 15 custom van manufacturers have signed up for the show, scheduled to run at the State Fair of Oklahoma Fairgrounds March 11-14.

Upwards of 75,000 spectators are expected to jam the four buildings and courtyard at the fairgrounds for the sixth annual showing by local car and light-duty truck dealers. There were 67,000 spectators in 1992, Roby said.

Admission charge to the show is $5 per person, with children under 12 admitted free, Roby said. Discount tickets are available.

Although the price seems high, Roby defended the practice, saying "it saves consumers money."

"This whole show is for the convenience of the consumer," Roby said. "With 450 cars and light-duty trucks that we have on display with the 54 dealers participating, consumers can shop around and look at everything at one time. If they had to drive to all the different dealers and look at all the brands available, it would take them two or three months and 20 tanks of gasoline.

"So, it's cheaper for consumers to drive here to see everything in one place. …
