TWA Operations Said to Be in `Substantial Doubt'

NEW YORK _ Trans World Airlines' ability to continue operating is in "substantial doubt," the company's auditor said in a document submitted to the Securities and Exchange Commission. Accountants at KPMG Peat Marwick said that if TWA doesn't draw enough cash from passengers, its heavy debt limits the amount of money it can borrow. A TWA spokesman told Aviation Daily, a trade newsletter, that the language is standard for a company trying to complete a Chapter 11 reorganization and was in last year's auditor report as well. TWA officials could not immediately be reached on Good Friday. Food Lion Claims ABC News Violated Racketeering Laws

GREENSBORO, N.C. _ Food Lion Inc. is seeking to stiffen its lawsuit against ABC News with allegations that the network violated federal racketeering laws in its expose of the chain's food-handling practices. If U.S. District Court Judge N. Carleton Tilley Jr. grants Food Lion's request, the company will be eligible to win triple the amount of damages requested. The new suit would seek at least $30 million. In a lawsuit last year, the Salisbury-based supermarket chain alleged that ABC's parent company and a producer for Prime Time Live committed fraud by having the producer lie to Food Lion to get jobs at two Food Lion stores. Prime Time Live reported Nov. 5 that employees in Food Lion's fish and meat sections rewrapped and changed dates on out-of-date food. College Professors Average $46,270 a Year

WASHINGTON _ The average college professor makes $46,270 a year, with private university teachers typically the highest earners and those at church-related schools the lowest, a professors' group said Friday. Those on the faculties of private, independent colleges and universities earn an average of $51,570, while those at public schools averaged $46,000. …
