An archives library planned in new space in the University Center at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond will be named in honor of U.S. Sen. David Boren, D-Okla.

The Nigh Institute of State Government at UCO and the Oklahoma Department of Libraries announced the decision to name the facility the David L. Boren State Archives Library. The state archives are to be relocated from the state library near the Capitol.

A 170,000-square-foot addition at a cost of $15 million is planned for the student center, with the archives library in 40,000 square feet. Cost of construction is estimated at $1.5 million, with supplies and stock estimated around $500,000, said Lt. Gen. Richard A. Burpee, vice president for development and community relations at UCO.

The University Center expansion is part of an overall $45.7 million in building projects planned at the university that would add up to eight structures.

"We wanted to name this library for Senator Boren because he has been a major player in Oklahoma's history. He is respected throughout the state and the country as a public servant and a scholar. He and his family have given greatly to our state. This is one small way to say thank you," said UCO President George Nigh, a former Oklahoma governor.

"Senator Boren has been a teacher, Rhodes scholar, state legislator, governor and now a U.S. senator. It is very fitting that we recognize his commitment to Oklahoma."

David L. Boren State Archives Library will be part of the Nigh Institute of State Government that is included in the building expansion south of the student center.

"All the historical documents dating back to statehood will be stored here. Among those are papers from governors, attorney generals and the Oklahoma Supreme Court," said Carl Reherman, director of the Nigh Institute. …
