Interim Director Named for OU Energy Center

TULSA _ Dr. W. Darrell "Gus" Gertsch will be interim director of Sarkeys Energy Center at the University of Oklahoma, replacing Daniel J. O'Neil who resigns June 30, it was announced Wednesday.

O'Neil, who came from Georgia Institute of Technology's Research Institute in August 1991 to take on the director post, announced his resignation about a month ago, saying he was returning to Georgia to pursue professional opportunities.

Gertsch, who also came to OU from Georgia Tech's Research Institute, has been associate vice president for research at OU since January 1992 and worked closely with O'Neil at Sarkeys.

Regents for the University of Oklahoma approved the appointment during a board meeting in Tulsa.

"Dr. Gertsch brings extensive experience in private business, higher education, and energy research and development programs to the energy center post," said OU President Richard L. Van Horn.

Currently, Gertsch develops and implements strategic business and marketing plans in critical technologies, organizes proposal development teams and new marketing efforts plus establishes new technology transfer processes. The latter includes encouraging new technology, start-up companies as an outgrowth of research and inventions developed at OU.

Gertsch had been executive director of Georgia Tech's advanced energy and environmental technology marketing and development program, and associate director of the Advanced Technology Development Center _ Georgia Tech's technology park and business incubation center.

He has six years of experience in managing national laboratory and university energy research programs, 15 years in private business and five years of university teaching. In private business, Gertsch has been a consultant and was cofounder of a geosciences consulting and environmental services company that operated for 10 years. …
