NEW YORK (AP) _ Major airlines on Wednesday matched America West's discounts of up to 30 percent, but restricted the sale to routes flown by the Phoenix-based airline.

America West has been discounting its advance-purchase tickets in various ways since November. Major airlines, including American, United and Delta, matched the discounts, as they have routinely since autumn.

Travelers have until July 28 to buy the discounted tickets, but can't fly until at least 14 days later. Travel has to be completed by Oct. 1. Although the discounts are as high as 30 percent, most of the examples provided by America West were more like 25 percent.

Separately, TWA had added one day to a broader sale, pushing it through midnight Wednesday. TWA had mistakenly believed that one of the nation's largest airlines had planned an extension and pinned on its own extension just in case.

USAir matched the TWA extension, but other airlines allowed the sale to end on Tuesday. …
