State Active Rig Count Falls to 98

Oklahoma's weekly active drilling rig count fell by six to 98 rigs, according to Baker Hughes Inc. That is seven, or 7.7 percent, more rigs than 91 active in the same week a year ago.

Houston-based Baker Hughes has tracked the rig count since 1940.

Three of 12 major oil and natural gas producing states showed gains during the week. New Mexico, up five rigs, had the largest increase in activity. Four of the 12 states showed declines from the previous week, and five remained unchanged.

Six states showed increases compared with the same week in 1992, while six were behind last year's levels.

U.S. rig activity declined 19 from last week to 713 rigs running. That is 46, or 6.9 percent, more than 667 active in 1992.

Active offshore rigs numbered 82, down four from last week, though up 33 from 49 a year earlier. The horizontal rig count is down 3, compared with last week, to 58, but up one from the same week last year. …
