Bell Hardware Problem Plagues Metropolitan Area

Thousands of Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. customers in central Oklahoma had trouble completing their calls for several hours Monday because of a Bell hardware problem.

Thom Hunter, Bell spokesman, said about 500,000 access lines were affected in the Oklahoma City areawide calling system, which includes cities such as Chickasha, Edmond, Norman, Shawnee, El Reno, Guthrie and Oklahoma City.

Hunter said the trouble began about 9:30 a.m. and was cleared up shortly after noon when Bell officials did a cold start on the system.

The hardware problem wasn't immediately isolated, but Hunter said garbage data apparently was being produced. That created the illusion that the load on the switch was higher than normal.

Hunter said the system normally has a 55 percent usage rate on Monday morning, but the system showed a rate of more than 80 percent and rising.

Bell took protective measures, Hunter said, and blocked a certain number of calls from going through. …
