Education Group Calls for Salary Hike for Teachers

TULSA (AP) _ The annual Oklahoma Education Association meeting opened Thursday in Tulsa with the group's president and actor Mike Farrell urging higher salaries for teachers.

Farrell, a human rights activist invited as a keynote speaker, and OEA President Barbara Smith complained that teacher salaries in Oklahoma and other states are too low.

Their comments came one day after the release of a report by the American Federation of Teachers showing that Oklahoma's average teacher salary of $26,355 ranks 47th in the country.

It said the national average was $35,104.

Farrell, who played B.J. Honeycutt on the television show "M-A-S-H," used a guns-or-butter analogy to urge less spending on defense and more on domestic issues.

"We need to take another look at our priorities in this nation and decide if kids are more important than bombs," Farrell said. "The cost of one B-1 bomber would solve all the problems of the education budget in the state of Oklahoma and probably a dozen other states. …
