Sale of KOCB Channel 34 to Close by End of Month

Oklahoma City's only locally owned and operated television station, KOCB Channel 34, will lose that status in early December.

Federal Communication Commission approval for sale of the station to Superior Communications Group Inc. of Pittsburgh, Pa., was granted last week. Sale of the station will be completed following a 40-day waiting period that will end Nov. 29, said Ted Baze, KOCB general manager and president, who owns 100 percent of the station's stock.

"We have a 10-day period after that until Dec. 9 to close the sale," Baze said.

Plans for sale of the station to Superior Communications Group, which also owns WDKY-TV, the Fox Network affiliate in Lexington, Ky., were announced during the summer by Baze. Superior is owned by an investor group headed by Chairman Albert M. Holt and President Perry A. Sook.

New general manager of KOCB will be Perry Sook, who already has moved to Oklahoma City and is monitoring day-to-day operations of the station, Baze said.

"Hopefully, it will be a smooth transition," Baze said. "We don't expect there will be any changes in staff. Everybody is going to stay. We don't have any indications anyone will leave. We have a first-rate staff, the best we have ever had."

Baze, who was one of the founders of the television station in 1979, plans to leave Oklahoma City after the sale is completed.

"I'm retiring after 35 years," he said. "We have already bought a house in Wichita Falls, Texas, and have actually already moved there. We have an investment company and I will develop that and look for investments."

He has a son who lives in Wichita Falls.

Baze came to Oklahoma City from Texas to found the television station, which was first known as KGMC. He previously had worked in Dallas and San Antonio. …
