Turnpike Authority Gathers Data for SEC Probe of Refinancing Plans

The Oklahoma Turnpike Authority is gathering information to answer a request from the Securities and Exchange Commission about proposals submitted by bond underwriters wanting to handle a 1992 deal to refinance $600 million in debt.

Mary Kay Audd, a spokeswoman for the Turnpike Authority, said Friday the request was received last week.

The federal regulators also want to study how four of the system's newest turnpikes were financed.

Ron Mason, the turnpike authority's former financial officer, said there's nothing for the SEC to investigate, at least as far as the technical aspects of the deals are concerned.

The refinancing was expected to be one of the largest transportation deals nationwide in 1992, former Oklahoma Turnpike Authority chief executive Richard Ridings said at the time.

Merrill Lynch Co. was hired as senior manager for the bond issue in a joint venture with Stifel Nicolaus of Oklahoma City.
