LAS VEGAS _ Personal computer makers for several years have taken a step outside the industry to attend the Consumer Electronics Show. But this winter's exhibition, opening today, will for the first time feature the leading makers of the technology behind PCs.

The presence of Intel Corp., the largest chip maker, and Microsoft Corp., the largest software writer, is a sign of how important consumers have become to the computer industry.

"The use of PCs in homes and by small organizations is the fastest growing part of the business," Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates said.

A little more than 30 percent of the nearly 15 million personal computers bought in the United States last year were for home use. Some analysts estimate that could reach nearly 40 percent this year.

Consumers spent more money for new personal computers last year, about $7 billion at an average price of $1,500 per machine, than on TVs, VCRs and stereos. Only the market for video games and equipment came close in dollar value.

Many of the discussions and seminars at the show will focus on the effects of computer and network technology on items like TVs, stereos and telephones.

Robert Kavner, executive vice president of AT T, will give the show's keynote speech Thursday. He leads the long distance company's efforts to develop advanced communication products and services integrating voice, video and data.

About 1,600 exhibitors and 79,000 people are expected to attend the event, set up at the Las Vegas Convention Center and three large hotels.

While the computer industry is taking a growing role, the electronics will still be dominated by big names like Sony, Quasar, Matsushita and Thomson-RCA. Hundreds of smaller companies will display niche products ranging from pocket radios to control panels for the electronic devices of an entire home. …
