State Rig Count Falls, U.S. Rises

Oklahoma's active drilling rig count fell by three for the week ended Friday to 105.

The count was 16 rigs, or 18 percent, higher than for the same week in 1993, according to Baker Hughes Inc. of Houston, which has kept track of the count since 1940.

The nation's rig count rebounded for the week to 743, up 10 from last week and up 129, or 21 percent, from 614 the previous year.

Rigs drilling for oil increased by 10 for the week to 330. That was up 12, or 3.8 percent, from 318 reported for the same week in 1993. Gas rigs exploring slipped one to 404 from the previous week. The total was 50 percent, or 134 rigs, higher than 270 exploring last year.

Offshore rigs accounted for 100 rigs running, up six from last week and up 37, or 58.7 percent, from last year.

Horizontal rigs working totaled 53, up four from last week and up 10 from the same week in 1993. There were 138 directional rigs drilling, up seven from the previous week and almost double the amount recorded from a year ago. …
