Nonmanufacturing Employers List Led by Three Sectors

A list of the largest nonmanufacturing employers showed the majority of employers in the Oklahoma City area were health care, government and educational institutions.

The list, compiled with information from the individual companies responding to a mail and telephone survey conducted by The Journal Record, showed 10 health care organizations, five government employers and four educational institutions.

The remaining employers which did not fit into these categories included Homeland Stores Inc., which had 2,090 employees; Kerr-McGee Corp., with 1,253 employees; Remington Park Inc., with 1,175 employees; American Fidelity Group, with 1,044 employees; and Liberty Bancorp Inc., with 1,000 employees.

Comparing nonmanufacturing employers with manufacturing firms, the three largest employers in the Oklahoma City area are nonmanufacturing.

The State of Oklahoma with 34,184 employees in the metropolitan area is the largest in the city and has a payroll of $863.4 million. Statewide 63,497 people are employed with the state for a payroll of $1.6 billion.

Tinker Air Force Base, another government employer, in Midwest City had 21,933 employees in all of its units including the Oklahoma City Air Logistics Center. It had a 1993 payroll of $722.3 million. After June 17 Maj. Gen. Kenneth E. Eickman will replace Maj. Gen. Joseph K. Spiers as the local top executive at the base.

The University of Oklahoma had 7,322 employees at its Norman campus and a payroll of $135. …
