State Rig Count Up to 99; U.S. Figure Reaches 772

Oklahoma's active drilling rig count rose 2 to 99 for the week ended Friday.

The state count stayed below the 100 mark for the fourth consecutive week. The count was five rigs higher than for the same week in 1993, according to Baker Hughes Inc. of Houston.

The U.S. count rebounded for the week to 772. The nation's count was up 19 rigs, or 2.5 percent, from last week but down 33 rigs, or 4 percent, compared with the same week a year ago.

Rigs exploring for oil totaled 320 for the week, up nine from the previous week but down 80 rigs, or 20 percent, from the same week in 1993. Gas rigs exploring for the week increased 10 to 438. The count was 33 rigs, or 8 percent, higher than a year earlier.

Offshore rigs totaling 94 were up three from last week and up four from a year ago.

Horizontal rigs drilling for the week rose two to 48 for the week. The count was down 13 rigs, or 21 percent, compared with the same week in 1993. Directional rigs working for the week totaled 138, up seven from last week and up 34 rigs, or 33 percent, from the same week last year. …
