Rig Counts Post Year's Highest Marks

Active rig counts for Oklahoma and the nation reached their highest marks of 1994 on the week ended Friday.

The state count jumped 12 to 119, according to Baker Hughes Inc. of Houston. The count was 18 rigs higher than for the same week in 1993.

The nation's count for the week totaled 836 _ up 32 rigs, or 4 percent, from the previous week but down 30 rigs, or 3.5 percent, compared with a year earlier.

Rigs exploring for oil rose 13 for the week to 339. The count was down 101 rigs compared with the same week in 1993. Gas rigs exploring for the week totaled 484 _ up 17 rigs from last week and up 64 rigs, or 15 percent, from a year earlier.

Offshore rigs active totaled 97, up one from last week and up three from a year earlier.

Horizontal rigs drilling slipped one to 56. The count was six rigs higher than for the same week in 1993. There were 144 directional rigs recorded active for the week. That was up three from last week and up 27 rigs, or 23 percent, compared with the same week a year earlier. …
