Airline Center Applications Fall Far below Expections

LITTLE ROCK (AP) _ Only 2,000 applications for jobs at a planned Southwest Airlines reservations center have been returned, out of 12,000 applications the company handed out.

The number of applications received is far below the 9,000 for which the company had hoped, airline officials said.

Southwest Airlines was swamped with people seeking applications after its Aug. 25 announcement that it would create 900 jobs at a $10 million center at Little Rock Regional Airport. Now under construction, the center is set to open in January.

The 2,000 applications received so far probably won't be enough to fill the jobs at the center, according to Sherry Phelps, director of employment for Dallas-based Southwest Airlines Co.

"Typically, we'll interview 10 people for every one we hire," she said, "and we'll have probably 600 to 800 more positions to fill even after we've gone through the applications we have on hand.

"My fear is they heard all of the hype about the thousands of applications and said they didn't have a chance, but that's not true," Phelps said. …
