IBM to Ship OS-2 as Planned despite Last-Minute Repairs

NEW YORK (AP) _ IBM hustled to douse a public relations brushfire Wednesday, saying the OS-2 Warp software for personal computers will go on sale as planned next week, after word got out of a last-minute repair.

The company on Tuesday started replacing the first of the 21 diskettes that contain OS-2 Warp to correct a problem that occurred when the program was installed on a PC.

Some copies with the defect had been sent to stores and are being replaced, said IBM spokeswoman Allison Johnson. She did not have a specific number. Some also went to computer industry reviewers.

The trouble got attention from the Boston Globe, which reported that IBM had stopped production of OS-2 Warp. However, Johnson said the company had merely substituted the correction in the production process and started replacing diskettes in versions already boxed for shipment.

The product, given a splashy Broadway theater introduction two weeks ago, is supposed to start arriving in stores next week. …
