Memories Make Farewell to Murray Building Sad

I watched the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building go down Tuesday morning. I cried. And I'm not really sure why, although there are any number of logical reasons.

Perhaps it wasn't the edifice itself but those around it. When I came to Oklahoma City, I worked in the "society" department of The Daily Oklahoman. We were on the top floor of the old building at NW 4th St. and Broadway which we shared with the newspaper's library. That building is a historic place. When I came to work for The Journal Record, it also was a historic place.

Now both buildings are severely damaged from the bomb blast which caused the devastation at the Murrah building. The Journal Record Building is more at risk than the OPUBCO building, of course.

Among my many working companions on that fifth floor at The Daily Oklahoman was Ann Murrah (now Shaw), daughter of the late judge for whom the building was named. Although I only conversed with him several times, his name on the building made it a personal place to me. I have on my wall a painting by Ann, a painting which I like but which also is a personal one to me because of our friendship.

My relationships with the two buildings, The Journal Record and The Oklahoman, continue to be personal as well as professional. I liked them. I liked what I did in them. I liked the people with whom I worked in them. And I take it personally that some idiot did something to damage them.

I guess that's why I cried _ for my irreplaceable, historic buildings and for the beautiful building named after the father of a friend.

My tears for the dead and wounded were shed several weeks ago. Don't forget the Lyric Theatre's big show Sunday night to benefit the Mayor's Disaster Fund. In listing all the big stars who have agreed to appear in "Broadway Sings for the Heartland," I omitted one of our very own local stars, Thomas Carey. …
