Oklahoma May Be Poised for Best Tourism Season Ever

Memorial Day weekend is the kickoff of what may be Oklahoma's best tourism season yet.

The sharp rise in requests to the Oklahoma Department of Tourism and Recreation for information about travel in Oklahoma that began in spring and summer of 1995 has carried over into this year.

Calls made in May to the Oklahoma Department of Tourism and Recreation toll-free number are up 18 percent from last May, the department reports.

Reservations for Memorial Day are sold out at the six state-owned resorts, said Tom Rich, deputy director of the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department.

Advance state lodge reservations for the remainder of the season also are going at a fast pace and ahead of last year, he said.

"We are expecting a bigger and better summer than ever," Rich said.

The newest facility in the state lodges and resort system, the 40- room Lakeview Lodge at Beavers Bend State Park, is fully booked for the Memorial Day weekend and on into part of the remainder of the season, he said.

Rooms there are being booked despite the fact all of the amenities, such as phones and television sets, are not yet installed.

That facility, built at a cost of about $1.7 million and opened May 6, is the first new lodging to be added to the state parks system in about 20 years.

"We really didn't have the money to do what we wanted to do there. The cost of construction went up, so the community there raised $250,000 to do it the way we originally planned. They realized it was going to be a benefit to the community," Rich said.

Lakeview Lodge supplements 47 cabins at Beavers Bend State Park, which have the highest occupancy rate of any accommodations in the system.

"The accommodations at Beavers Bend State Park attract a lot of Texans from the Dallas area," he said.

A 20-unit lodge is under construction on a bluff at Robbers Cave State Park near Wilburton for a July opening. …
