Tompkins Nominated for Seat on State Investigation Bureau Commission

Oklahoma City attorney Ray Tompkins has been nominated by Gov. Frank Keating to sit on the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation Commission.

Tompkins is a shareholder and director with Conner and Winters. He was selected to succeed Oklahoma City businessman Marvin Weiss. Senate confirmation is required to complete the nomination.

Tompkins has already served on the commission once. In 1987, he was appointed by Gov. Henry Bellmon. He served one term as vice chairman and four terms as chairman of the commission before his seven year term expired in 1994.

Wells joins law firm

Bryan J. Wells has become a shareholder and member of the board of directors of Self, Giddens & Lees Inc., an Oklahoma City law firm.

His practice is in commercial litigation and business reorganization. He has been with Self, Giddens & Lees since the firm was founded in 1991.

Opala to address Citizens League

Oklahoma Supreme Court Justice Marian Opala will be the speaker for the annual meeting of the Citizens League of Central Oklahoma.

The meeting is scheduled June 26 at the Robert M. Bird Library, University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, 1000 Stanton L. Young Blvd.

A reception is scheduled for 5 p.m. with a business meeting at 5:30 p.m. The program is scheduled at 6 p.m. Reservations should be made by June 21 by calling the Citizens League at 236-0521.

Opala's topic will be "Patriotism: My Country, Right, or Wrong."

Fighting crime pays off for state

The state of Oklahoma was awarded more than $4 million in funding under a formula grant program to enhance efforts at fighting crime and violence.

The money was awarded under the Edward Byrne Memorial State and Local Law Enforcement Formula Grant Program, which is administered by the Bureau of Justice Assistance.

Oklahoma plans to use the money to support projects such as community crime prevention, multi-jurisdictional task forces, drug abuse education and criminal justice records improvement. …
