George Short Receives Law Day Award Hancock-Smith Wins Liberty Bell Honor

Oklahoma City trial lawyer George F. Short received The Journal Record Award for 1996 at the Oklahoma County Bar Association's Law Day Luncheon Wednesday at the Medallion Hotel.

Short, senior partner with the Short, Wiggins, Margo & Adler law firm in Oklahoma City, is the 16th recipient of the award.

John L. Kominicki, editor and publisher of The Journal Record, presented the award. The Oklahoma County Bar Association selects the recipient each year for outstanding service to the legal profession and community.

Also during the luncheon, Cynthia Hancock-Smith received the Liberty Bell Award for her contribution to the legal profession. Hancock-Smith is the pro bono coordinator with Legal Aid of Western Oklahoma.

The Liberty Bell Award is presented by the Young Lawyer's Division of the Oklahoma County Bar Association. The award is given to a non- lawyer whose actions have worked to promote a better understanding of the law, encouraged greater respect for the law and the courts, stimulated a sense of civic responsibility or otherwise contributed to good government.

Short graduated from Southeastern State College in 1947 and from the University of Oklahoma College of Law in 1950.

Throughout his career, Short has served in various leadership positions with numerous groups at the county, state and national levels, including the Oklahoma County, Oklahoma, and American Bar Associations. He served as president of the Oklahoma City Jury Trial Lawyers Association in 1969 and on the board of directors of the Oklahoma County Legal Aid Society from 1971-73.

He has also been involved with the Academy of Trial Lawyers, Federation of Insurance and Corporate Counsel, Trial Attorneys of America, American Board of Trial Advocates, American College of Trial Lawyers and the American Inn of Court CV.

Other organizations in which he has participated include the International Association of Defense Counsel and International Academy of Trial Lawyers.

In addition to his practice, Short has given many lectures at seminars and various colleges and universities. …
