Tyson Foods Seeks South Dakota Location for Hog Feeding Facility

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- Officials from Tyson Foods, a Springdale, Ark., company best known for poultry, are scouring central South Dakota, looking for the best spot for a hog feeding operation.

Tyson wants to ship Oklahoma feeder pigs to South Dakota to get them to market weight, Hughes County Commissioner Ron Baumgart said Tuesday after the company officials met with the commission.

"Basically, Tyson Foods came in to tell us that they're probably going to be becoming actively involved in contract feeding of butcher hogs in the state of South Dakota and they're going around county to county just (to) inform commissioners and zoning people what they're looking at doing," Baumgart said.

Tyson would contract with South Dakota farmers, who would sell the company grain and be part of the operation.

Four to 10 buildings would be built, containing 1,000 hogs each, Bill Moeller, a company vice president, told the Hughes County Commission. Tyson would build a feed mill and buy about 4 million bushels of corn and 20,000 tons of soy meal a year. …
