Just how rich is the country's richest man?

Just to depress you, here's a Web site that continuously calculates Bill Gates' worth in Microsoft stock. It draws on Microsoft SEC filings to extract the number of shares Gates owns as founder/CEO, taps into the stock market to get the latest price, and multiplies it all into one big honking number. The calculations update automatically as the market price fluctuates. Last Monday morning, for example, the stock was at $116.75, which put Gates' worth at $32,960,900,000. That's almost 33 billion dollars. Safe to say this guy won't be looking under the sofa cushions for beer money. The Webmaster, Philip Greenspun, an MIT professor in Cambridge, Mass., also points out a couple more things to cause us envy. First, this is $123.34 for every person in the USA. It's the Forbes 400, an annual list of the wealthiest people around published annually in Forbes magazine. The editors have done a nice job of converting the list to an on-line, searchable format so you can generate your own envy list by age, state, source of wealth, etc. Follow the links all the way to the end and you get the text blocks summarizing each rich person -- the same information that's already appeared in the magazine.
