Lucent Wins Equipment Contract Valued in the $1 Billion Range

DENVER (Bloomberg) -- Lucent Technologies Inc. beat out rival Northern Telecom Ltd. for a multiyear contract to provide as much as $1 billion of wireless network equipment to U S West Communications Group.

Lucent also won two contracts valued at a combined $178 million to supply wireless equipment to Frontier Corp. and Hansol PCS. Hansol is one of three companies that will offer a new type of wireless voice and data service called personal communications services, or PCS, in Korea.

The agreements are the latest for Lucent since its split from AT&T Corp. last year. The equipment maker has lined up customers from the Baby Bells to Netscape Oommunications Corp., staking it to a second quarter profit that beat analysts' expectations. "Lucent has a great track record," said Peter Mannetti, vice president and general manager of U S West Wireless Communications.
