Local Attorney Uses Photography to Ease Litigation Stress

Article excerpt

For one Oklahoma City attorney, his camera provides catharsis -- a creative outlet he's now sharing with the city.

Conner & Winters' shareholder Peter Bradford says his photography allows him to escape the high-stress demands of litigation. "It gives me something else to think about except lawsuits."

Peter and his son Tim have combined their efforts to present "Two Views from the Far East" opening Sept. 5 at the Individual Artists of Oklahoma gallery in Oklahoma City. As a young Air Force JAG officer in the early `60s, Peter was confronted with an unfamiliar world when he was stationed 30 miles west of Tokyo. He encountered the innocence of rural Japan, a society he characterizes as simpler and unaffected by time. Thirty years later, Tim, an English teacher and a Stanford graduate, visited the Himalayas in northern Nepal and the Ganges river in Varanasi, India. Each photographer presents not only spectacular scenic shots, but poignant portraits of natives. "The most interesting are the people," Peter notes. He says his shots of rural Japan capture a time before Sony, Nikon and the Nippon Bank -- when many scenes were as they had been for a century or more. Pictures of Hong Kong and native boat people with their floating suburbs are also part of the show, which includes 27 photos. This is Peter's first show. He says he and Tim decided to exhibit the collection after looking back through old photos together. As for his current work, Peter admits a weakness for his favorite subject. "Right now, I'm taking pictures of my grandson." The show runs through the end of next month and admission is free. IAO, located at One North Hudson, is a nonprofit gallery and performance space presenting contemporary visual and performance art in all media. It's open Tuesday through Saturday 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Call 232-6060 for more information. Trailblazers Five women -- trailblazers in Oklahoma's legal profession -- will be honored today as part of the Oklahoma Bar Association's Women in Law Conference. …
