FORT SMITH (AP) -- A family business that has operated for 69 years in Arkansas and Oklahoma closed much of its operations Friday. White Dairy was founded in 1928 by the Tankersley family. Hiland Dairy Foods of Springfield, Mo., announced Wednesday that it has purchased the White Dairy's manufacturing, route and distribution system.

In addition to its Fort Smith manufacturing plant, White Dairy operated distribution facilities in Little Rock, Fayetteville, Mena, Tulsa and Oklahoma City. The purchase price was not disclosed. Both companies are privately owned. White Dairy President Don Tankersley said the time had come to end the company's manufacturing operation. "We felt like the time was right for us to stop manufacturing," Tankersley said. "Hiland has a fine manufacturing and distribution system that's unequaled in the world." White Dairy will retain its overseas operation that distributes food and drinks to U.S. military bases and its local institutional food business, Tankersley said. …
