A bulldozer will bring down the 30-year-old Clarion Airport West in January to make way for a new hotel in the Interstate 40/ Meridian Avenue corridor.

Hotel owners S&H will begin construction of a six-story Hilton Garden Inn in June with 165 rooms and 33 suites. Before work begins on the Hilton, construction will start on a 35,000-square-foot convention center that will adjoin the Meridian Hotel and Suites on the site.

The family-owned company based in Fort Smith, Ark., did not disclose the cost of the project. Smithers Construction from Russellville, Ark., is general contractor. The property at 801 S. Meridian split into two hotels in 1994. It sits southwest of the I-40 and Meridian intersection. "This corner is probably one of the prime corners in Oklahoma City for a hotel," said Bill Finney, district director of Heartland Hotel, which manages the property. Finney said the project resulted from long-range plans to reposition the property, which faces competition from newly opened hotels including Extended Stay America, AmeriSuites and Wingate Inn. …
