One constant among men is that status is always with them. That's the belief of Warren Christopher, clothing and grooming editor of Men's Health magazine. He said what's important is understanding what the current status code is and that elegance -- in the way men live their lives and in the signals they send about their lives -- is part of that code.

"What we're really seeing is that elegance has been redefined and has become a bigger idea," said Christopher. He says men have taken a real inside out look at their lives and they realize that the first point of control is their own health and fitness. Of course, the more men embrace fitness, the more there will be a market for tailored clothing, for example. Christopher said men want clothes that say they're living the streamlined, balanced life. That part of the status code will continue to fuel the growth of clothes that say, "I'm living an interesting life -- I mountain bike, wind surf, golf: . . . whatever. A subtle change in the status code began with the dressing down Friday theory. New signals made their appearance. Elegance and luxury didn't go away; they just re-invented themselves. To illustrate his theory, Christopher cited luxury sport watches. Now that's elegant casual. This says a man might be involved in interesting sports and that he can afford the better timepiece -- best not because it's more expensive but because it says he understands its performance capabilities. He sums it up this way: Yes, there's affinitive movement toward a new lifestyle of elegance. However, it doesn't have to be expressed in terms of formal black tie or even Giorgio Armani Couture. He thinks we're beginning to see that the new status code of elegance translates to men having the opportunity to express their individuality in both their active wear and casual wear choices. Perhaps Warren Christopher's thoughts will help all the women who are about to purchase clothing and accessories for the men in their lives. …
