Mardi Gras Ball

Article excerpt

Co-chairs of the 11th annual Mardi Gras Ball on Feb. 21 are Lou Kerr and Karen Swyden. This black-tie gala is sponsored by and benefits the Societies of Oklahoma City University and each Society presents an honoree for recognition during the evening.

The Marriott Hotel will be the setting. It will begin with a reception hosted by Dr. Clara Jones, an OCU trustee, at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7:30 p.m., an awards ceremony at 8:30 p.m. and dancing until midnight. Entertainment will be provided by OCU's American Spirit Dance Company and the OCU Jazz Arts Orchestra. A silent auction also is planned.

The sponsoring Societies and their respective honorees are Cheryl Browne, the Kirkpatrick-Petree Opera and Music Theatre Society; Ann Henry, Dulaney-Browne Library Society; and Nancy Ellis, Norick- Hulsey Gallery Society. Also to be recognized is Jeanne Reed who will receive the Distinguished Philanthropist Honor. Reservations for the black-tie gala are $125 per person. Corporate benefactor tables are available at $2,500 per table for 10 or benefactors reservations at $250 per person and corporate patrons at $1,250 per table for 10. Checks made out to the OCU Societies may be mailed to that group to the attention of Diane Murphree, 2501 N. Blackwelder, Oklahoma City 73106-1493. Mardi Gras Ball honorary chairmen are Dr. Jones and Jane B. Harlow, both of whom are former honorees, as is Lou Kerr. Anita Clark is past president and corporate sponsor chairman is Ashley Rice. The decorations for this party always are elaborate and colorful and the fancy invitation indicates this will hold true for 1998. Chairing the decorations committee are Liz Hedrick, Nancy Martin, Sue Patterson, Debbie Musick and Dee Jabara. You gotta have heart If you haven't made your reservations for the Heart Ball yet, you'd better hustle. It may get sold out if it's not already. Terre Chaffin, chairman (with hubby Dr. John), is absolutely thrilled with the response to the ball -- and the invitations haven't even gone out yet. After all, the black-tie benefit for the Oklahoma division of the American Heart Association isn't scheduled until March 28. Patron reservations are $600 per couple and corporate tables are available -- if you hurry. This party got off to a good start with a $50,000 underwriting donation from NationsBank, the largest single sponsorship in the history of the previous 16 Heart Balls. I mean, where else would you have the opportunity to meet genuine royalty and bid on a genuine Faberge Egg? Poultrygeist cackles Cocina de Mino, one of the restaurants cooking up omelets for Poultrygeist the Party, a benefit sponsored by and for the Oklahoma City Art Museum, had so many orders that, after breaking 300 in omelet preparations, they ran out of their egg mixture. …
