Tulsa County DA to Resign Next Month

TULSA (AP) -- Tulsa County District Attorney Bill LaFortune will resign June 15 to take a job with a private law firm.

LaFortune, whom Gov. Frank Keating appointed to the position in December 1995, said his ability to provide for his family played a role in his decision to join the Tulsa firm of Norman Wohlgemuth Chandler & Dowdell.

"As a father and a husband, I have become increasingly concerned over the toll my job has taken on my family, particularly my three young children," he said in his letter of resignation to the governor. "While I am sure different families respond differently to the pressures of political life, the effect on my family has been troubling. "Beyond that, the financial strains" of being a public official for 11 years "have begun to catch up with us," he wrote. LaFortune served as a special judge in Tulsa County before being named district attorney after the death of David Moss in 1995. He also has been an assistant attorney general and an assistant district attorney. …
