Ironic, isn't it, that nostalgia never had it better now that we have the Internet? Used to be that we suffered through retrospectives annually around new year's as TV, radio and newspapers "remembered" for us what happened in the last year. Every new decade brought a 10-year lookback. And just wait until the millennium... No, don't wait. Go to this 20th Century Web site, built by Alternative Entertainment Network, and you can browse through film and newsreel clips going back to 1930. (You have to download the RealPlayer plug-in to view the stuff, and there's a whole hour wasted, thank you very much to the bozos at RealNetworks.) There's a very large library of clips here, organized into four categories: news, sports, entertainment and humorous. Each of these is broken down into years, so you can, say, click on 1934 and see what newsreels can be viewed. Unfortunately, the webmaster didn't bother with any kind of search engine or user-driven searching device. That means that if you are looking for a particular clip, you have to guess what category, then what year, and keep trying until you either find it or give up. This is a treasure trove of good stuff -- Babe Ruth taking a swing, The Beatles in a live performance, Bogart selling war bonds, Elvis leaving the Army, James Dean mumbling. (Technical note: Cybergeek's computer already had RealAudio installed but the AEN site insisted that he download the plug-in anyway. It took him three days of trying before the RealNetworks' servers were available. AEN says it specializes in bringing streaming media to the Internet, but if the Geek's experiences were typical, then AEN will remain undiscovered.)
