Harold's Stores has expanded onto the West Coast with a new store in Palo Alto, Calif.

At the same time, the upscale Norman-based clothier is closing its second oldest location -- the downtown Oklahoma City store at 101 Park Ave. Its last day in operation is set for March 31.

The 4,275-square-foot Silicon Valley shop brings Harold's total number of stores to 45 in 20 states. Until last year, American Stock Exchange-traded Harold's had focused its growth in the South. "Along with our recently opened Salt Lake City store and successful Denver and Phoenix locations," said President H. Rainey Powell, "this new store provides us with an even stronger base to continue our expansion plan in the West." Executive Vice President Ken Row said Harold's is looking over the next 18 months at more opportunities in the San Francisco area, Seattle and Portland, Ore., as well as sites in Arizona and Colorado. The Palo Alto store is in the Stanford Shopping Center near Stanford University, home also to Neiman Marcus, Macy's, Bloomingdale's, Nordstrom, Ann Taylor, Banana Republic, Williams- Sonoma, Brooks Brothers and Polo Ralph Lauren. "Clearly, northern California is one of the most prestigious markets in America. Stanford Shopping Center is one of the highest dollar-per-square-foot centers in America," said Row. "This was our first choice for our first store in the area." Unlike other Harold's stores, the Palo Alto store will exclusively sell women's apparel. …
