Local Restaurant Goes to Smoke-Free Environment

OKLAHOMA CITY (JR) -- The theme on the sign outside RJ's Cafe, 4221 N. Santa Fe, is "It's Like Coming Home."

The theme fits the menu of old-fashioned hamburgers, chili, stew, chicken and dumplings and traditional breakfast fare. It now will also mean that "It's Like Coming Home" to a smoke-free environment. Beginning today, RJ's is a smoke-free restaurant.

Owner Rick Strack began researching the effects of secondhand smoke four months ago and decided to go smoke-free with the encouragement of family and friends. Strack was shocked when he tested in the high-risk category after a physical for his insurance company. Although he never smoked, the test results showed he had the same nicotine level of a smoker -- the result of working in a smoking environment for 12 years, according to the American Cancer Society Heartland Division. Studies show that for a nonsmoking worker who is exposed to secondhand smoke for eight hours a day, it is as if they smoked six cigarettes, according to the Cancer Society. …
