Insurance Salesperson Targets New Arena

EDMOND (AP) -- For Bobbie Thompson, selling insurance was becoming a tired, old ride. So the Edmond area resident of more than 20 years quit her job and saddled up to do the same thing, but for horse owners.

For six years, Thompson has steadily built her stable of policyholders who want to insure the health, life, fertility and well-being of their high-priced or otherwise valuable steeds.

Not that selling and dealing with horses is much of a stretch for the 58-year-old.

"Oh, no, I was raised around plenty of both," she said.

"There's only been about 10 years of my life where I wasn't involved with (horses) almost daily," said Thompson, who sells her specialized insurance as an independent agent of Horse Insurance Specialists.

There are only a handful of such agencies in the state, and Thompson, along with husband Lyle, own one of the two companies located in the Oklahoma City market.

The other is Prairie State Insurance.

The southeastern Oklahoma native spends most of her time between May and December at horse shows around the state greeting potential new customers and reuniting with old ones and friends.

"Most of the way I have generated my business is by going to these horse shows and sales and participating in all of the events at the state fairgrounds," she said.

Many of the people she talks with are simply interested in her unique profession.

"A lot of people just want to know how to get into this line of business. But there aren't many that do it."

Thompson and her husband also have daughter Valerie Noah involved with sales, keeping in line with a family tradition of selling.

Thompson's late parents, Travis and Francis, both provided for their family of six by selling needed merchandise to neighboring residents in the small, rural Oklahoma town of Heavener.
